This article resonated with me a lot. I see in my teaching and professional practice a lack of understanding of the role of the image in society at large but also a lack of understanding how the image can be used as a tool for individuals within their own profession. Im surprised by this given the amount of imagery that the students consume and produce everyday. They have no critical faculty when it comes to images and media.

Im also witnessing changes in the use of the image and photography as a transdisciplinary tool in teaching and learning. Thats the place im seeing where students in one discipline are using methodologies from another in the class room. Ie a scientist using photography as an analysis and documentation tool.

As someone from a visual communications training which is essentially design training i found the grounding and framework of vis com more appropriate than any specialised training or narrow visual practice. Mainly because the framework of visual communications is primarily concerned with understanding what the image means, how to make the images is secondary.

Thanks for the article!
