SegWit is a soft-fork, so it’s backwards compatible. This is the fundamental difference. Once the 95% threshold is activated, if that 5% wanted to keep mining without SegWit they can. There would be no altcoin scenario with SegWit (SF). However, BU is a hard-fork, which leaves the possibility of a split in the hashrate mining 2 different (non-compatible) chains.
