Dear Tracy,

You’re right.

I speak for myself (not Medium) when I say that the team working on these challenges are genuinely, and relentlessly, dedicated to fixing them. There’s no question we need to work even harder, as both humans and the humans building the bots. And if the bots aren’t doing the job, we need to ramp it up as humans doing this manually.

In the meantime, here are a few personal suggestions made the old-fashioned way: a hand-curated list in the areas you tagged (Art, Design, Politics and Technology), some obvious and others not-as-much. In reverse order:

Technology

Harvard Law Professor Susan Crawford often writes for Backchannel, effortlessly distilling gnarly topics (from big cable/internet access to how a revamped CSPAN could save the day) for laypeople like myself. Karen Wickre, Twitter’s editorial director, talks tech but also waxes poetic on social justice issues. Apropos to your post, edtech guru Audrey Watters just recently wrote about algorithms, identity and power in education. And Leila Janah — everything she writes is brilliant. Same with Slack’s EricaJoy ❤.

Politics

One name: Holly Wood. She’s not for the faint of heart, but there are few commentators so incisive and absurd across the entire political media landscape. Ester Bloom, an editor at The Billfold, offers keen perspectives on issues like unpaid interns on the campaign trail. Anne-Marie Slaughter and many folks on the New America team are consistently addressing political issues through their publication, as is the NRDC’s Rhea Suh on environmental issues and labor leaders Randi Weingarten and Lily Eskelsen García on education. And the politicians themselves — Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, Gabby Giffords, Maxine Waters and many more. Oh, and The First Lady.

Design

Facebook’s Julie Zhuo is one of the most popular writers in Medium’s (short) history. IDEO’s Sandy Speicher, who has led the charge democratizing design’s role in solving challenges in education, writes beautifully and curates just as well. Belgian designer Veerle Pieters posted for the first time today, and my former colleague Juliette Melton recently posted on using design research to launch The New York Times en Español.

Art

I’ll admit this is my weak spot. I’m a huge fan of Vantage, and especially Taylor Glascock’s work — but that’s more photography. While not everything she writes falls in the ‘art’ category, Abby Norman’s work is genius.

If you want any other categories, there is an overwhelming number of talented writers and leaders on Medium.

We promise to do a better job elevating them.
