Your first automation in Epic with Dragon

In a recent post I talked about the value of learning Hotkeys to make your experience in Epic easier. Specifically, I recommended learning the Hotkey combination to close an encounter when you are done with a visit.

Now, it’s time to take that one step further in making it even simpler. Dragon is a great tool for automating repetitive keystrokes and steps. I’m going to teach you a super easy way to get started here:

This is all it takes to set it up. With Dragon open say, “add new command”. Fill in the boxes to make it look like the picture above. Click save.

That’s it. Next time you are done charting on a patient and you still have your PowerMic in your hand, simply press the button and say “close encounter” and watch the magic happen.

This is a very simple automation, yet a great example. You get to feel how powerful EMR automation can be in just a few simple steps.
