3 Tips To Avoid Snacking And Overeating

Day 184/365: I know it’s hard, but not impossible…

I’ve been a foodie all my life. I’m still a foodie because once you’re a foodie, you can never go any other way. The truth is, food is a very important part of my culture and for actually many cultures around the world. The love for it comes from my grandfather, who would always share his plate with me even though I had one of my own. He’d explain to me that when people offer you food, you can never say no even if you’re full to the brim.

Unfortunately, excessive eating is not great in any culture on Earth. We can get as much food as we like nowadays, as we’re in a developing country with easy access to restaurants and supermarkets with every single food item you can possibly think of. Which is great, but also bad because it makes it extremely easy for people to develop an overeating habit.

I know I did for the past 10 years or so. I’d always stuff my face with big portions and when it came to snacking, I’d be the first who’d finish a bag of chips in literally 5 minutes. But with time, I developed some rules that I hold onto dearly and which allow me to overcome my somewhat unhealthy habit of overeating and excessive snacking.

1. Never skip a meal

The first rule to avoid overeating (or possibly passing out from not eating for 20 hours or so at a time) is to never skip a meal. If you’re not hungry, limit the portion to the minimum, but still go for it.

If you don’t eat lunch, for example, and you work late and have a shabby dinner, your body will demand you to stuff your face with chips and chocolate late at night, which is simply bad. Or, if you’re an idiot like me, you can simply forget to eat all at once and have a little fun while eating out the next day.

I almost passed out a couple of years ago in a restaurant because I hadn’t been eating for about 20 hours before getting there. I was having pains in my stomach and the room simply started spinning with me. Once I ate, all the symptoms stopped and I was better again.

2. Eat good proteins at least once a day

Food means proteins and vegetables for mains and fruits and the occasional cake for dessert. If you don’t get in enough proteins throughout the day, there’s always going to be that tendency from your body to ask for some more food from you once you get up from the lunch table.

In order to avoid snacking, you need to keep your proteins to a maximum. They’ll keep you satisfied and full for longer periods of times than any other food nutrients. As long as you feel full, you’ll never reach for the chocolate bar or bag of peanuts at night.

3. Water

Every time I feel hungry, but know I just ate so it’s just my overeating and snacking telling me they’re hungry, I sip on some water. Water has some amazing health benefits and it’s often forgotten by many of us. We have too little water during the day and the consequences are harsh.

If you feel powerless, dizzy, uneasy, hungry or even sick to your stomach in the middle of the day or afternoon for no apparent reason, chances are you’re dehydrated. Sip on water constantly.

I keep a water bottle right near my mouse at all times. I regularly sip on water between articles, or whenever I take a 3-minute break to clear my head. It refreshes me and makes me feel like I’m full, thus allowing me to move on with my work without the urge to reach for a snack that I simply don’t need.

What’s your tip on avoiding snacking or overeating?
