99% Of Your Fears Will Never Come True

Day 324/365: People fear about having fears…

Marilyn Manson is one of those people that are not for everybody. He’s been seen as the Antichrist for years by religious groups. They even said he’s Satan himself, who came back on Earth in the shape of a rock superstar in order to spread his message and overtake the people.

Nonsense, of course. In fact, Marilyn Manson is one of the most intelligent singers in the world. He has over the years surprised me with interviews that were more about philosophy, life and everything else, rather than music that makes your ears bleed and your hair stand up on your arms.

There’s this one quote that I remember from a documentary about him and the paintings that he does. He says something like this:

“When I was growing up, I was constantly afraid that I was possesed by the devil. I was always the weird one, the quiet one, the one that would never fit into any group. Now, as an adult, that fear has changed. Now, I’m afraid of not being posessed by other people.”

There’s so much to be taken from this life quote. The fears that we travel with for most of our lives, most of them will never come true. In fact, more than 99% of your fears will never turn up on you. They will simply never happen.

Yet, we develop such intimate relationships with these fears of ours, it’s almost much more convenient to just leave with them, rather than do something about proving them wrong. Although that would take minutes or hours at most.

You’re afraid of flying on an airplane? Book a ticket, fly, come back on the ground, the fear is over.

You’re afraid of not making it at that interview? Go to the interview, crush it, get hired, be yourself again.

You’re afraid that girl is going to say no to you? Ask her out, have a great time, be with the person you’ve always wanted to be with.

Fears are just illusions that we like to play around with in our brains. The brain is such an intricate, mysterious machine, we’re still not sure how it works or why it prefers things like fears, anxieties and bad thoughts over calmness, relaxation and positive thinking.

Why do we have to work so hard in order to achieve the latter, and why is it that the first category simply comes to us without us even asking for it? We’ll never know for sure, but the way we humans came to be has a big influence over the way our brains work today.

Fears are there to protect you, but they most of the time make you stay on your couch and do nothing to grow as an individual. Why? Because you know it’s easier to be scared, than to do something about what is it that you’re scared about. It takes courage and work to deal with that stuff.

Which makes fear a much faster, easier and, although hard to live with, a reliable solution over the much harder, taking-some-action solution to eleviate that fear. We’re humans, we’re intelligent mamals, we should know better, right?

RIGHT?

Yet here we are, constantly thinking about why we fear this, and why we fear that and what might happen if we do this and that. While being perfectly aware that most of our fears have never turned out to be true.

Being a human being has its perks, but it’s hard for the most part. At least we have Netflix, fried chicken and fast lanes at the airport…
