DO NOT Work On A Project That Drains You

Day 218/365: Even when you’re freelancing, sometimes less is more!

When freelancing full time, you’ll eventually land on a project you simply don’t like. This is what’s happening to me right now. I met a great guy who needs some blog articles and some Quora answers written. He pays well, he’s quick with a response and very polite when asking for edits.

The ideal client, really.

The only problem is, I really don’t get the stuff he’s asking me to work on. He needs some stuff about email verifiers, about LinkedIn messages and so on.

The information online is scarce and extremely poor, which means the ideas are not really concrete, which means other freelancers wrote those article and maybe encountered the same problem as me.

Simply put, I took on a project I am not comfortable going through with to the very end. The right thing to do here is to write up the stuff the client paid already, after which apologise, grab your tools and leave.

You can’t deal with a project you don’t like working on with. It will drain you mentally, creatively, physically. It will make you want to run away in the middle of the day because you simply can’t do it, which makes the whole day unbearable. It’s not a mind thing, it really is a thing of perspective.

Yes, I’m a freelance writer. Yes, I write about anything and everything for a living. Yet, the more I write and the more I get to write about different, totally out of my reach stuff, I realise how important a niche is even in freelance writing. Which is why I’ll mainly stick to my areas of expertise from now on and will turn down projects I’m not comfortable with.

Regardless of how good the pay is.

Sometimes, less is more.
