Egypt Is A Different World On The Same Planet

Day 280/365: It’s amazing, shocking, unpredictable, and crazy!

I’m still tired after my Egypt trip. This holiday was more active and fast-paced than any other previous ones. This was a good thing because I got to see and do so many things, but also a bad thing because I’m now still struggling to get back on my feet. I need a vacation after a vacation like this Egypt one.

I’ll do a full review of my trip soon, but for now, here are a few thoughts about what I got to see, feel and experience during my week in Egypt:

  • Egypt is hot. Like, really hot. When we landed in Hurghada, it was 39 degrees Celsius. Back home it was 9 degrees. Wear sunscreen, drink a lot of water and also, drink hot tea. Yes, drink hot fluids when it’s hot. Trust me, it works!
  • The resorts in Hurghada are great, but the people at the front desk are totally unprofessional. We had to pay $20 extra to get a nice room, otherwise, we would’ve been put in the rooms nobody stays in. This is a complete ripoff as we paid a lot of bucks for our rooms;
  • The desert safari on buggies and ATV bikes we did on our second day was simply stunning. Going for those mountains after miles and miles of dessert, arriving at the beduins camp, that was like we were landing on Mars. I was simply left without words;
  • Cairo is completely CRAZY. There are so many people, so much police, so many unfinished buildings, so much traffic and so hectic, it’s simply shockingly amazing. It’s a lively city that, although it’s struggling, stays alive through its people and tourist attractions;
  • The pyramids are HUGE. Trust me, you will never forget the first time you see them. There you are on the bus, after a 7-hour drive, tired and hot. You wait and wait and hope to finally see them through the tall apartment buildings. Yet, they’re nowhere to be seen. And when you give up, you slightly see the tip of the great pyramid. A few seconds later, the shape reveals itself again. That’s one of the best moments of your life;
  • The street sellers can be rude, but the only thing you need to do in order to get rid of them is to tell them “No, thanks!” in their language, which is “La, shukraan”;
  • If you want to have the best view over the pyramids every day, you should get a job at the Ministry of Antiquities of Egypt. Their headquarters are in an old temple building that’s steps away from the great pyramid. That’s a great place to work regardless of how hot it is.

I’ll stop here for now. Weekend is over in a bit and I have to get ready for a new workweek. Don’t worry, plenty more Egypt articles coming your way!
