Fast Sundays 16: Birthdays

Day 112/365: Birthdays are a paradox, but they used to be a lot of fun. Not anymore…

Fast Sundays: Every Sunday, I write a 300 words post on different topics of interest, after starring at the blank laptop screen for 3 minutes. Whatever pops into my mind at the end of the 3 minutes mark, that’s what I’ll scribble below.

I’ve been to a birthday party recently, which is why I decided to write about it here. Why? Because I really have not much to say about them. And I needed a short story to post on Sunday. As in, Fast Sundays.

The thing about birthdays is, they are a paradox. There you are, one year older. One year closer to the end. One ear less powerful, less energetic, less handy and less everything. And yet, you gather your friends and eat like a bunch of pigs all night, and then drink like a bunch of weasels.

It’s no wonder most birthday parties are simply boring. Nobody seems to be having a good time, but just go because they have to go. Because if they don’t, they hurt the feelings of the birthday boy or girl. If you do go, you just sit there and look at your phone for 90% of the time.

In the rest of the time, if you’re weird like me, you think about how birthdays are a paradox, excuse yourself to the bathroom 3 or 4 times and then play Doodle Jump in the men’s room, to avoid total boredom.

I like celebrations, don’t get me wrong, but when it comes to having a good time, I’m all about location. I hate classical restaurants, so why not have your friends over, fire up the grill and toss some steaks on it, and then jump around and drink your brains out all night?

That sounds much better than celebrating your friend’s approach to death in a nasty, expensive restaurant…

Thank you for your time!
