Fast Sundays 18: Flying

Day 126/365: One of those things you love and hate at the same time…

Fast Sundays: Every Sunday, I write a 300 words post on different topics of interest, after starring at the blank laptop screen for 3 minutes. Whatever pops into my mind at the end of the 3 minutes mark, that’s what I’ll scribble below.

As you’re reading this, I’m getting ready to go to the airport, from where I’ll fly out to Italy, probably my favourite country on Earth. This would be my 20th or so flight, so you’d think that flying would be just another task for me to get done and then be on my way.

But it can’t be. The human mind, no matter how calm and strong it might be, can’t be fine with the fact that, for the next hour and 10 minutes, you’ll be up in the air at 37.000 feet, in an encased metal tube with wings and another 150 or so people, flying about like a bird. It just does not make sense, which is why people the world over have a fear of flying.

I have it too, and most of us do, but it’s important to realise the benefits of flying. If I were to drive to my destination, I’d need at least 15 hours for that alone. The bus would’ve taken me to Italy in about 20 hours, and the train would’ve needed about 30 hours to get me to where I need to go.

Also, flying is the safest mode of transportation out there. You have a much higher chance of getting killed on your way to the airport, than you have while on board an aircraft. The fear is still there, but the important thing is, flying is actually incredible, a marvel of engineering, which is why our minds still can’t process the reality of it.

It’s still too young for humans to understand that we were capable to invent the aeroplane. That’s it, simple psychology combined with science and a little history. All right, I’m off to the airport now, have a good Sunday!
