Fast Sundays 26: The Mind

Day 182/365: Training the mind is key to a happy life

Seneca wondered “there are so many men who train their bodies, but so few that train their minds.” He wrote these words thousands of years ago, yet the truth from this sentence is so common today, it’s concerning.

People pay all their money for gyms, personal trainers, shoes, equipment and so on, but forget about training their minds. Which is odd, because training the mind is free.

Mind Training Is Free

All you need to train your mind is your mind. And the beauty about it is, you don’t need any outside help or tools. Everything is inside you already. You don’t even need a coach. Training the mind is much easier. There’s no physical effort you have to put in. There’s just the will to want to do it.

“Being sexy is all about attitude, not the body. It’s a state of mind” — Amisha Patel

Training the body without training the mind is futile. Useless. Why? Because it’s like training a swimmer to swim, but on land. It’s like training the youngster to read, but with nothing but scratch cards and poker cards.

It’s like climbing a mountain that has no peak.

Analogies aside, I see there’s a trend now that young adults take on often, when they go to the gym once or twice a day, train for hours and then get back home and be happy with their accomplishments.

Excess Is Not Healthy

There’s nothing bad in training your body and keeping it healthy, but what’s bad is excessively doing it. No, it’s not ok to train the body 7 days a week. No, it’s not ok to eat right every single day. No, it’s not cool your body looks like those people from the magazines because that’s Photoshop, not something natural. We are not perfect machines, nor are our bodies.

Instead, train your mind for acceptance, calm, ease, intelligence and commitment. Train for being okay with who you are and what you are. With your strengths and weaknesses.

Train the mind as much or even more than training the body. While the body does look good and almost Photoshop-like, the mind remains untrained and you’ll feel miserable, unsatisfied and obnoxious regardless of the progress you see in the mirror.

The real progress can only happen in the mind.
