Fast Sundays 9: God vs. Religion

Day 63/365: I love God, the source of all good, but hate Religion, the source of wars, hate and keeping poor people poor

St. Peters Basilica, Vatican City — Gabriel Iosa

Fast Sundays: Every Sunday, I write a 300 words post on different topics of interest, after starring at the blank laptop screen for 3 minutes. Whatever pops into my mind at the end of the 3 minutes mark, that’s what I’ll scribble below.

We’d be 1500 years more advanced if Religion wouldn’t pull Science back and literally burn some of the best minds the world has ever had. This is why I can’t take Religion seriously. I can’t take seriously a multi-billion dollars industry which pays no taxes, has one of the biggest wealth on Earth and still takes money from the poor every single day, playing with their beliefs.

God is a universal term. God has never saved his son from eternal damnation, by putting him on a cross for our sins. Why would God do that? It’s the utmost ridiculous thing ever.

“Everything is possible. The impossible just takes longer” — Dan Brown

If God knows everything, the good and the bad, the past and the future, the right and the wrong, then he would know not to put his son on the cross for the people who, regardless of his sacrifice, would never ever change their ways. The ultimate God is not in the Bible or any other book, although some of the teachings in those books are inspiring. The ultimate God is not the God of one Religion or the other. The ultimate God is Love.

Love is what makes us human, is what gives our lives meaning and empowers us to move forward regardless of what we’re going through. I’ve seen people get their cancer cured without chemotherapy, but just by believing in a higher power.

In reality, those people just wanted to live. They were their own Gods and loved themselves enough to be able to cure themselves, to be able to give up on bad food and habits and just see themselves better.

“God is Love. God is the ultimate Love. That’s what my mom told me, right before dying in my arms. Right there and then I knew I had nothing to lose, and that made me invincible” — David Blaine

The entire Universe worked for them with Love, the ultimate God as the strongest invisible power that ultimately cured them forever. For the others, it was a slow, agonising and painful death, but not because they never believed in a god, but because they never loved themselves enough to even fight.

God is real, but just because Love is real and in any of us. We were born knowing right from wrong, knowing to love our moms and not hurt other people. We don’t need a book written thousands of years ago to keep ourselves alive and happy.

We don’t need to give money to the church, which is responsible to most of the wars and poverty periods in our recent history, and who never pays taxes or even follows the laws that we all follow.

“If we could reason with religious people, there will be no religious people” — Dr. House

That aside, we live in a time when we need God more than ever before. We need Love in order to accomplish whatever it is that we want, and we need Love because it makes us better persons. Religion sucks, but God is a totally different story. Believe in God, which is the Love within yourself, and you can move a mountain just by thinking about it.
