Here’s Why I’ll Never Move To Istanbul

Day 313/365: It’s not the city’s fault…

After each and every one of my trips to a new city, I always like to put my imagination at work by playing a little game. It’s called the “would I move to this city I’ve just visited for a month?” game. It works like this: I sit down, think about my experience in the city, the good and the bad and then come up with a list of reasons for or against moving to the city for a month.

Istanbul is a 15-million people city. It’s almost as populated as Cairo, which is simply shocking. It’s not that I can’t handle that, but it’s not quite great to work as a freelancer and have a hard time finding a place to sit at your local coffee shop because of tourists flocking around all the time.

That’s a big negative for me, the tourists. I’d rather live in a city next to a big one if I have good commuting possibilities than right in the middle of it with everybody else.

Another thing that pissed me off sometimes is the way Turks work. They are simply slow. They don’t care. They make mistakes and they don’t care. Nope. Not today, every day. They’ve mistaken my order 3 times at McDonald’s, 2 times at Starbucks and one time at a local doner place.

They walk like there’s a funeral going on all of the time, they never sit at a traffic stop and they can’t understand people need to get out of the tram before they can get in.

The list of reasons to live in Istanbul is extensive. You’ve got the cheap food and utilities, the good commuting options from places like Kadikoy to the city centre, the great airport that basically connects the city with the entire world, the cheap services and great transportation system. They are all extremely well put together and they do make Istanbul a magnet for digital nomads and foreigners from around the world.

Yet, this city is not for me mainly because of how the people, not the city, work. They’re a bit on the slow side of life and that’s not something I’d like to be dragged into. Not because I wouldn’t like it, but because I can’t imagine myself turning my speed 70% slower for the rest of my life.

Istanbul is great and has revealed itself to me in an amazing way. Crossing the Bosphorus Straight and listening to the Turkish music on the ferry while the sunset was happening over the metropolis was the moment I fell in love with Istanbul. Yet my relationship with this city will always be a long-distance one.

I’ll visit it from time to time, we’ll meet and hug and hang out like the best old buddies. But for the sake and health of both of us, we’ll keep our distance for the most part and enjoy the times we’ll once again unite for food, great palaces and magical sunsets.
