How To Sell Yourself

Day 265/365: But how to do it when you can’t?

Business is dirty enough, but being your own product at your own business is even dirtier. It’s so hard to sell yourself, even if your products are great because you simply feel like you’re not worth the price you’re asking for. Or you’re not worth your client’s time.

Not because you’re not good at what you do, but simply because selling yourself is hard. It makes your mind go places when you try to sell yourself, it’s a new level of underappreciation you’ve never thought you had in you.

I think this is only natural to be happening. Everybody does it. Everybody that has a personal business undersells their product or… themselves, if it’s a one-man business. Like a content creator business. I know I do it, but there’s really no cure about it.

You see, creative businesses can’t be linear. You can sell a lightbulb at the same price for 3 months and you know that if you sell 100 lightbulbs, you will make 300 bucks for them. With creative stuff, the price is never the same and the request is always varying.

If you have a good month this month, chances are you’re going to have a slower one the next. If you have 3 clients for August, you’re most likely going to have one or two in September. Or none, if the interest for your niche drops suddenly. And it does, from time to time.

Which means you have to lower your price and do some work you are not really the best at but do it because you have to pay your rent. Which makes selling yourself even harder, as you start to doubt your own capabilities. Forgetting it’s just a slower month and you have to do what you have to do in order to make it. Nothing more.

You and your products stay the same, so you have to sell yourself with the same confidence that you did in your best month ever. Nothing less of that is good enough.

Simply reminding yourself that you were selling the same product 3 months ago, when you made a crapload of money, will help you not only overcome a bad month but outsell yourself to the best clients ever.
