I Have A Pigeons Wall At The Office

Day 249/365: It almost drove me crazy…

Ever since I came to this coworking office, we have what I call a pidgeons wall. There’s an old horn right near the place and pigeons are always running up and down on it. They’re playing around if pigeons play around for some reason. Or they’re just mocking me.

The thing is, I was aggravated by the sounds the pigeons were making the first few days I came into the office. The loud bangs and bird sounds were not exactly great for creating a writing atmosphere for creativity and progress.

I began to scream, shout and bang in the wall, hoping that the pigeons would go away. They did. But then, the next day, the pigeons would be right there, having a party in the old horn just by the desk. So naturally, I began screaming and shouting and banging my fists against the wall, and then there was silence was again, as the pigeons would leave.

The next day, the pigeons would be back and having a football match. It took me about a month to realise I can do nothing about the pigeons throwing parties all morning right near my office. I’m not a skilled diver, nor a firefighter, so I can’t go and manually remove the pigeons from there.

So I decided to go against going crazy and just accept the fact that the pigeons were part of my day. There are this pigeons, and they’re drinking champagne and popping bottles and listening to Fat Joe and Busta Rhymes all morning, and I have to sit here and write about it.

So be it.

This is what we have to learn to do in life. We have to learn the powerful habit of acceptance. If we can accept that there are some things we can’t control, we can move past them and just let them run their course. Nothing lasts forever.

I’m sure one day the pigeons will just get bored and leave, in search of another ballroom. When that happens, I’ll realise how foolish it was of me to bang my hands against a wall just to try and change something I had no control over. This happens with situations, emotions and thoughts every single day for all of us.

Just let them be, accept them and work with them towards reaching your goals. It’s simple if you don’t make it complicated.
