I Just Bought a $400 Piano. Am I Crazy?
Day 157/365: Is this impulse, or lifelong dream turned into reality?
Ever since I was a little kid, I was obsessed with Disney’s Aladdin. I watched the movie on repeat, sang the Arabian Nights song for hours on end, bought every puzzle, toy, video game, CD and book about it and basically lived off of the magic of Agrabah for years on end.
This March, I had the crazy opportunity to go and see Aladdin in London. You know, the musical inspired by the movie and the books. Needless to say, it was the most amazing 2 and a half hours of my life. I mean, it was a dream for me to see the musical for all my life, so to be able to see it in person and to experience the magic only Disney can deliver on stage, that was surreal.
A few weeks later, I got obsessed with watching Youtube videos of people playing Aladdin’s songs on different instruments, like “Friend Like Me” (someone give me her phone number, I want to marry her. Thank you!) on the piano or “Arabian Nights”. I just watched for hours how’d they fingers moved along the piano and make it sing the most amazing songs ever written.
Should I... you know… buy a piano?
“I’m 25, and I know for a fact that it’s a little late, but should I buy a piano and, I don’t know, maybe learn how to play these songs MYSELF?”
The key word here is “myself”. Looking back at my love for these songs, to be able to play them myself would be the ultimate proof of dedication for the Aladdin universe. They are some of the hardest songs out there, but if people could do it, I should be able to do it as well.
I know people start playing the piano in a school probably, but back in my day, music classes went something like “ok, I’m your music teacher, Mr Violin, please sit down and read from page 42 and leave me alone”.
So last night, while searching online, I bought a digital piano. I simply went online, clicked a few buttons and… that’s all she wrote. Am I impulsive for doing that?
Am I impulsive for spending $400 on an instrument I’ve never even touched before? Is this wasted money, or am I simply fulfilling a lifelong dream of owning and learning to play the piano that was buried deep inside and has now risen to the top and exploded?
I simply don’t care. I bought a piano and, as I happen to know myself very well by now, nothing is going to stop me until I’ll be able to play “Arabian Nights” and the entire Aladdin repertoire like Alan Menken.
I’ll keep you posted!
