I Love My Fake Watch

Day 290/365: It’s a Lacoste, or so it says on the band…

The time is 17:39 and our minibus makes a stop somewhere in the middle of nowhere. We’ve now been travelling for more than 3 hours on an interminable highway from Alexandria to Cairo, after a very long day of visiting and eating very little food. I am tired and so is the rest of the group.

The guide tells us we can have a break for 10 Egyptian minutes to stretch our legs and maybe have a delicious Schweppes Gold Pineapple. We don’t get that in our country, as we don’t get the pomegranate flavour either. Why? I don’t know. Also, 10 Egyptian minutes are like 30–45 European minutes.

I go inside the highway stop and spot a small stall with fake watches and wallets. My first reaction was to simply pass by the stall, but three Lacoste watches caught my attention immediately. I usually don’t bother with buying clothes and accessories from huge brands as I know I’m mostly going to pay for advertisement and just like 25% for the product itself.

But I do have a weakness for Lacoste as a brand.

So I start bargaining with the young dude from behind the counter. He asks for 250 Egyptian pounds for a black Lacoste watch. I joke and say I only have 25 pounds on me. He laughs and sees the 200 pounds note in my wallet. I feel stupid. I pull out a 10 USD note and tell him he can have half of this note for the watch. He laughs, then pulls the bill out of my hand and hands me the $5 change and the watch.

Isn’t shopping for fakes like, AWESOME?

This would’ve never been possible in a brand store. Brand stores have to pay for rent, electricity, gas, employees and so on and so forth. The dude at the rest stop, he pays for stuff also, but the taxes are much lower and although the product might be fake, although it holds up extremely well after almost 3 weeks of usage, he can still give you the product for a bargain.

The moral of the story is if you can spare some 190 bucks on a watch, even if you’re buying a replica, just do it. Avoid wasting money on ads that big brands show in Times Square, for example. Why would you do that? Instead pay a young Egyptian with a dream to open his own fake brands store one day.
