Mastering The Mind Is Impossible

Day 269/365: But you can do better with each day!

I study psychology because I’m amazed at how well (or unwell) the human mind can work, yet we know close to nothing about how it does what it does. So many things are still left unknown, it’s mindboggling to think about just how undiscovered the mind and the brain itself still is.

Yet, people talk about how to master your own persona. How to develop strength, intelligence, confidence and mental agility like it’s just another thing you do. They say sure, you can master your mind, you can do it by reading this blog post, this book, watching this movie or documentary, going to this class, taking this meditation retreat and so on.

When in reality, mastering your own true self, your own mind from start to finish, it’s an absolutely impossible task to partake. It’s stupid to even consider trying to reach your full mental abilities, let alone hope to master it all by yourself in a lifetime. It’s idiotic.

Instead of mastering your true self and becoming some sort of Buddha, which again, is impossible no matter how much you prepare, read, write, meditate and yoga you do, try and be a little better with each day that passes. Try and remember why this day was a little better than the last. Even if it was a hard day, every day is a little better than the last for some reason or another.

If you simply don’t find the reason, just consider this new day as being better than the last simply because it exists. Here you are, enjoying a new day. That should be a good enough of a reason to feel a little bit more masterful.
