Seeing The Pyramids Of Giza

Day 282/365: It felt like I was levitating…

I can’t believe I took this picture…

It’s so hot in the minibus, the AC is like a breeze in the desert. It cools you off for 2 seconds, then it’s back to sweat and dehydration. I had 3 bottles of water and yet here I am, feeling tired and getting my very first headache of the trip.

Being in Egypt is in itself a great deal for me. You see, my family never had money for exquisite trips, expensive cars or designer furniture. We just now finished our living room and everything else and it looks great, but up until now, we were your typical low to middle-class family with not much wealth.

But because I’ve worked my ass off this year, I somehow managed to not only put my house in order but to also be here, in Cairo, steps away from the Great Pyramids of Giza.

The excitement builds up as the minibus enters the gate of the city and then strolls pass hundreds of cars. Nobody follows traffic laws. There are no traffic lights in Cairo. Maybe 2 or 3, but that’s all. And no, they don’t work. You get in and you’re immediately sucked in by the organised chaos.

It’s beautiful. Almost hypnotic.

The apartment buildings in Cairo are tall. Like, really tall! It’s so hard to see anything in this city because of them. We spend the next 40 minutes trying to look for the shape of at least one of the three pyramids from the Giza plateau.

Nothing. Just blocks and unfinished buildings for miles and miles.

But then, just as we start to give up on hope, we sort of see the mysterious shape of one of the pyramids raising from behind two apartments blocks. Was it the pyramid? Was it not? The people are confused but excited.

After another 30 seconds, the shape of the Great Pyramid of Giza reveals itself in all of its glory. It takes our breaths away. You forget about everything, even about the 8-hour drive, the sweat and the heat, the craziness of the city and the traffic. We just saw the only remaining wonder of the Ancient World.

Nothing else mattered at that moment that I’ll never forget in my entire life. It was like I was reborn. It was Moment Zero of a new life for me. It was the closest thing to a spiritual revelation that I’ll ever come across with. It was serene. It was like I was levitating.

A month ago or so I had no hopes of ever seeing the pyramids in my life. Yet there I was, in a small minibus in Cairo, grasping my first view of the most amazing building on this planet.

Dreams do come true.
