The First 24 Hours With The Piano

Day 160/365: I’ve already learned a song!

The model is Casio CDP-130. I have no clue what it means, but it’s amazing!

It’s now been over 24 hours since I had my brand new piano delivered to my door. People in my neighbourhood had but two reactions when I told them that I bought a brand new piano at age 25.

  1. Wow, you really can afford a brand new piano? Isn’t that expensive?
  2. All right, you might’ve gone crazy, what would you even do with it?

I’d like to pinpoint some things. First of all, I don’t think $400 for a brand new digital piano, with the stand and all is even that expensive. People smoke and drink sodas every single day.

If you were to stop smoking a pack of smokes and drink one can of soda every single day, you’d be able to afford it in 66 days.

Second, I’m not saying this is a cheap thing to buy. $400 is more than some people earn in a month in my country. Of course, to the outsider, it seems like I’d gone mad buying something so expensive. But the truth is, instead of buying a new car, or expensive phones or laptops, I simply decided to fulfil one of my life-long dreams and bought this instrument.

Third, I’ll do exactly what a piano is designed to do with: I’ll play. These 24 hours have taught me the piano is a hard instrument to learn, but also that I myself can play it and make it sound good. The hardest part is to figure out where the keys are. After that, you’re just pressing whatever keys you need.

I learned “Hedwig’s Theme”, well, the first two parts out of 8, to be honest, but I can actually play it almost perfectly with both hands. The hardest thing to figure out is how to play with both hands at the same time. It’s tricky, but the more you do it, the easier it seems to be for the brain to automatically tell you where and when to press what fingers on what keys.

It’s like magic, to be honest.

I’m back to some more practising. It’s rainy as hell in here, so it’s the perfect scenario to put on some more work and learn “Hedwig’s Theme” by the end of the weekend. I’ll keep you posted on the progress. Can you feel the excitement through these rows of text? I’m so excited!

Thank you for your time!
