This Is Why Writing On Medium For 365 Days Straight Is Wrong

Day 225/365: It’s not okay to write for so long…

For those of you who’ve turned the TV on later, my name is Gabriel, I’m 25 and currently a full-time freelance writer. I’ve been on and off the train of freelancing for years, but as of January 1st, 2018, I’ve decided to commit to it without looking back and no matter what.

Since that day, I’ve written one article on this blog every single day. I don’t think you can wrap your head around this notion as easily as you might think at first. For the past 222+ days, I had to sit down every single day, without a break, and write something on this blog.

One hour at least, every single day for the past 8 months, was dedicated to writing on this blog and moving on with this 365-days writing challenge.

It gets to you

Right now, I’m in a bad place about this challenge. It’s so hot outside, I simply can’t find any creative juices in my upstairs fridge of the mind. It’s mostly empty. It gets empty after just one or two pages of writing in the morning. It’s not really a great sight to see, but I still try and do my job and the challenge every single day. Weekends included!

This is not me trying to tell you the challenge has gotten too hard to move forward with. This is not me trying to tell you I’m about to fail the challenge. This is me simply pouring out my thoughts on this blank piece of digital paper, trying to make sense of the lack of creativity for this blog and then simply move on with it.

It’s my free therapy session on the matter, sort of.

Writing every single day as a job has been great for me. I’ve been doing it for years, 7 or 8, who counts really? But this writing challenge is sometimes obnoxious. It goes on, regardless if it’s a rainy Monday, a gloomy Thursday or a free Sunday. You have to sit down and write something. Anything.

“Anything” gets to be a burden after 222+ days of doing it non-stop. The articles can’t be quality pieces, because you are not a quality article producing machine. It’s unnatural to be great every single day. Yet, because you’re doing it so often, you can’t be good in general because of the continuity. You have no time to prepare a good piece because you have to put one out daily.

It’s a vicious circle, the only problem with it being its continuity. Take that out, put on a weekly writing challenge and you have a winner. That’s what I’m doing for next year, by the way.

Well, this has been one of those very few“personal blogging” blog posts of this challenge, so thank you for reading. If you have any thoughts about my thoughts on this, please share them with me down in the comments section.
