Why Do We Laugh Even When The Joke Is Bad? It’s Called “Conformity” And It Sucks!

Day 181/365: Why do we do these things to ourselves?

Acceptance

We humans have an unnatural desire for acceptance.

What I mean about “unnatural” is, this desire is not found in nature.

The lion gives close to no importance about if the other lions accept him or not, just the way he is. If they do or not, he’ll still wake up, hunt for some delicious prey and then eat his meal, before going into the shed and take a long nap.

Humans don’t do it like that. Because we humans have been denaturalised into thinking more about what others think about us than about what we should really care about. Which makes us miserable and depressed.

Think about the last time you were out with your buddies. There’s certainly that dude in your group who’s always joking, right? The truth is, not all of his jokes are really funny. But guess what? You and your friends laugh about most of his jokes because you want to feel like you’re part of the group.

Conformity

It’s called conformity. It’s the idea that by being ok with the thing the majority does, as in, laughing at even the most terrible joke, you get to be accepted by the group of people you want to spend your time with.

But this to me sounds crazy! Why would I want to spend time with a group of people so fake and selfish, they’re only interested in getting acceptance and go so far as to be okay with stuff they don’t believe in, just to make the others around them happy? Isn’t that the worst idea in the world ever?

For a better understanding of this conformity and how it manipulates people into accepting even the most unacceptable things, take a look at the Mind Fields episode on it. It perfectly explains how humans behave as a group and leave their ideologies behind, just to get acceptance and feel less alone. While giving up the stuff that makes them who they are.

And then again feeling like they’re not who they are. A vicious cicle, and a rather stupid, self-inflicted one. Watch the whole show, it’s very clever.

Editor’s note: if you don’t get Youtube TV or whatever they call it in your area (I don’t) you can search online on Reddit and find the full episodes there. That’s what I heard anyway, I don’t support piracy. Just when it’s a need…
