Voting Is Not About Self-Expression

I thought a referendum would have required a super-majority vote, you know, like 66% to remain or to leave. Someone should have established that the population vote had to be more than a simple majority. There must be a way that Parliament can dredge-up an arcane legality that would render this simple majority null and void. However, had such a legality existed, however arcane, the vote would have been nulled and voided and we would not have ‘leave’ right? I am quite befuddled.
