Just a comment on point 2: the LibDems did not need to go into a coalition with the Tories, as you say they did. Instead they could have entered a confidence-and-supply agreement, as the DUP have since done. This would have given the LibDems much greater freedom to object to particularly vicious Tory policies. Coalition gave Nick Clegg the rather showy and empty title of “deputy Prime Minister” when he could have been Secretary of State for a big government department: Home office, Foreign office, Health… real responsibility. And accountability.
