It sounds fishy, but…

With leaks, filtration issues, and mass death for no apparent reason, it seems shocking that fishkeeping is a relaxing hobby. After getting into the hobby, I was astonished by how relaxing my aquarium is.

There are countless days I have had anxiety attacks or been stressed from schoolwork, and the immediate remedy was to lay in front of my fish tank. Watching them swim and school, the flash of the colors in the scales, and the snails going over the gravel is tranquilizing.

Over time there have been studies that help to make the connection between aquariums and stress reduction:

  • The 1980s: In the early 80s, a survey showed that gazing at aquarium fish reduces stress and, subsequently, lowers blood pressure.
  • The 1990s: A nationwide survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association revealed the many health benefits associated with the presence of aquariums in the workplace. The study indicated that it not only reduced stress, but also reduced blood pressure, and improved overall emotional and physical health.
  • The 2000s: A 2009 Purdue study showed that Alzheimer’s patients exposed to aquariums ate more food, required fewer nutritional supplements, and displayed less aggressive behaviors than patients exposed to two-dimensional paintings of seascapes or patients in a control group.

Have you ever put thought into why most doctors’ offices have fish tanks?

There have been multiple studies done that show a correlation between fish tanks in doctors’ offices and lower blood pressure and anxiety before appointments.

Growing up, I was in and out of hospitals often. Being a kid in a depressing and sterile waiting room takes a toll over time. However, in medical buildings, I always sought out aquariums. Among all the fear and anxiety of appointments, procedures, and poking, I knew I could always find a fish tank somewhere if I looked hard enough. I would sit and watch the fish, and I would feel okay. I still have a love of fish and aquariums and I believe I always will.

Are you having a stressful day? Take a break and watch an aquarium.
