As part of my own healing from an emotionally abusive relationship, I have stopped using the phrase “make me/you/her/him/them feel.” No one can make anyone else feel something. We are all, each of us, the only agents of our feelings. Abusers demand that other people take responsibility for their feelings. This is the toxic element of emotional abuse. It’s important to call it out rather than step into the trap of co-dependence and surrender agency over one’s own emotional life.
