I work for a large public university and in addition to relatively generous benefits, we have the option of donating PTO to coworkers. Recently my HR office sent out a request for donations for a colleague. I can’t even remember if they provided the name of the person or any specifics. They simply indicated it was a worthwhile and important situation. I was able to offer some of my time, without it gouging my time off. I am glad this is an option. On the other hand, if I were to find myself in a situation where such a plea might be made on my behalf, I don’t know if I could bear to do it. I don’t know why. Something about the exercise of power on the part of my employer, happy to do the right thing in a crisis, slow to do the honorable thing on a day to day basis.
