Hi Saar — I recently had a very similar experience on a trip to San Diego. I tried to greet the homeless with a smile and a hello. As you said, the large majority would not even make eye contact. One man did return my hello and a smile. Another was agitated and started saying things I did not understand. I felt he was angry and maybe a bit aggressive. I stopped trying after that— out of fear, I suppose. It affects me deeply to see anybody suffer, but so I often, I don’t know what to do and so I do nothing.

Writing about it helps I think. Maybe you and I alone cannot solve the homeless problem, but maybe our awareness and willingness to see and share is a step. One step that might lead to another.
