This morning I had a conversation with my 17 year old son. We’ve had this same discussion before and I’m not sure he’ll ever really hear me over all of the sensible voices. He’s at the point where everyone wants to know what he’s going to study at college — What profession are you going to “be”?

Much advice and expectation centers on job prospects — money making prospects. I can’t tell you how much I don’t want that to be why/how he chooses a vocation. Of course I want him to be able to make a living — but I also want him to not spend his Sundays lamenting Monday’s return to work.

I’ve watched him closely for his entire life. ;) I’ve seen things make him soar and smile and others that make him bored, cranky and miserable. His life is no longer mine to control, but I will keep whispering — shouting if I have to — follow your curiosity — what lifts you up and keeps you going. The money may or may not come, but a life spent “chasing the carrot” is not the life I want for you.

Great post Linda!
