The train behind me sits stationary on the track, blocking my exit from the parking lot. That’s the danger in coming to walk at this marsh entry point. There is a double set of tracks here.

Often, although random in timing, one train must pause its travel to allow another to pass.

Our walk complete — with flies at an extremely annoying level, Mara and I have taken refuge inside of our truck. Sweat trickles down my back due to heat, humidity and the vehicle’s black, heat-absorbing interior.

Mara smells awful. Think wet dog. She took numerous dips in the black-silt bottomed marsh waters today. When we get home, we’ll have a date with the hose and some shampoo.

Despite the conditions, I am happy to be contained. Circumstance has offered me the chance to hook up with inspiration. I’ve got news!

It’s the turtles.

They’ve hatched.

Pieces of curled white shell littered the sandy bank, surrounding baseball sized holes in the dike. The shells looked similar to birch bark pulled from the tree’s shaggy trunk.

Not one baby turtle hung around for my viewing pleasure, but I am glad there was evidence at scene to indicate their life cycle proceeded without interruption from a hungry raccoon.

There you have it — breaking news.

I am still trapped, despite the fact that not one, but two trains have already passed on track two.

Mara is lightly snoring in the back seat.

She is a good example of acceptance.

I will follow her lead.

This has happened before.
