The fragrance of flowers and camphor surround devotees around Nandeeshwara Temple or Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani Kshetra.

Facts about Nandeeshwara Temple or Sri Dakshinamukha Nandi Tirtha Kalyani Kshetra:

Why is it named so: A steady stream of holy water gushes out from a stone Nandi’s mouth and is called ‘Tirtha’ in Kannada. This water flows onto a stepped tank in the temple and is known as ‘Kalyani’ or temple tank in Kannada. ‘Kshetra’ refers to a region of religious importance in Kannada. The name of this south facing temple is essentially an amalgam of all these elements.

The story behind the temple: Locals believe that the temple is about 400 years old. It was sold to a builder who unearthed an intact stone courtyard supported by pillars. Inside the courtyard was a prominent Nandi statue. A stream of water emerged from its mouth and fell on a Shivalinga. Both the statues in the temple face southwards instead of eastwards, as is the norm in most temples.

A must-visit shrine: This sacred shrine is located in the center of Malleswaram area and is a beautiful and peaceful destination. At the entrance of the temple, visitors will find a Nandi. There is a pond in the center bordered by stairs. Walk down a few steps and visit the main shrine which is lower than ground level.

Current State of the temple: Since it was unearthed there hasn’t been a lot of work done on this shrine. The temple apparently existed since the reign of Shivaji however nothing concrete has been proved till date. The source of the water is apparently Sankey Tank but this is also conjecture.

Other Attractions: A shrine dedicated to the deity Ganesha is present in the vicinity of this temple. Apart from this, other attractions include Gangamma temple and the eminent Kadu Mallikarjuna. The temple is in close proximity to Party Halls in Bangalore and the renowned tourist attraction, Kadu Malleshwara temple.

Why is this shrine unique? The structural design of this temple is unique as it is constructed around a central stepped Kalyani on an inimitable pillared — covered corridor. Nandi occupies pride of place as Shiva’s vahana in a majority of temples and is usually positioned in the front. The Nandi in this shrine is different as it is mounted on a dais on top of the Shivalinga.

The sound of gurgling water greets visitors as they walk down the stairs and head towards the shrine’s interior. Immediately there is a sense of peace and inexplicable calmness. There is something alluring about this temple even if one is unsure about its cultural, historical and religious importance.
