First Gold for Fiji in Rio Olympics

For a country that has endured so much misery this year with a cyclone that claimed 44 lives, this was their chance to smile as well as announce itself on the world stage. One government official estimates that the gold medal will generate 500 million Fiji dollars (about £161 million) in tourism and investment. But more than the money it is about the pride as Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who was just another supporter in the stands.
Fiji won its first gold on Thursday night at the Deodoro Stadium by knocking down Britain 43–7 in the final in a scintillating display of sevens rugby. The Fijians dictated play from the moment they opened against the USA on day one of the Games. Their ability to keep the ball alive was seamlessly combined with their trademark improvisation. It was a great Rugby match and commendable performance by Fiji that created history in Rio Olympics 2016.
Pre-tournament favourite; Fiji was imperious from the opening whistle. They dominated possession and ran in five tries by the break, Jerry Tuwai, Osea Kolinisau, Leone Nakarawa, Jasa Veremalua and Vatemo Ravouvou crossing.
Britain looked shell-shocked and Fiji added two more tries, with Dan Norton’s score little consolation for GB.
The South Pacific island nation’s first Olympic medal was celebrated at the final whistle in front of the country’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama.
Fiji created history in Rio Olympics 2016 with a team containing hotel porters and policemen, prison wardens who have just become national heroes. Ben Ryan, the English coach, could well find a place in Bainimarama’s next cabinet after confirming that he will be leaving the team.
There is a lot more to expect and watch in Rio Olympics 2016!!!
