Our Games Studio Before Lockdown

Today we officially launch our final year virtual Arcade — WSA Games https://wsagames.com — In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that all our face to face events have had to be cancelled we rapidly moved our user testing online.

So now anyone can download, play and provide feedback on the work in progress games.

You have the very first opportunity to play games from the next generation of creative game makers! And what else is better for a pandemic lockdown!?!

The games industry need more designers and artists. We are seeing growth in smaller independent teams that are agile and able to develop innovative games across numerous platforms. Technology such as Unity, Steam, Unreal and the app stores have unlocked the ability for anyone to make and distribute a digital product or game. Games are broadening their application in areas such as serious games, mobile and VR for a growing sophisticated audience.

Back in November (2017) Games Design & Art students worked with IBM and their speech to text system Watson to develop a game build on this technology. We are now nearing the completion of our first semester with our new 2nd year cohort. It has been an exciting time and there has been a definite buzz in our studios with game ideas and pitches being shared and discussed on a daily basis. We are now almost at the end of Semester 1, but it has been a very busy time to our students! This year, our first-year students had the opportunity to undertake their first project using the Barbican location as an inspiration.

In our Games Design programme at Winchester School of Art we structured our briefs inspired by the Double Diamond strategy. Students start understanding concepts and ideas, followed by definition, exploration and then building/making designs and game concepts/ideas.
