Week 1

We kicked off week one with a review of the summer project, using a glass and a map we had asked students to create a Psychogeography presentation of there local area, each student produced quite different approaches from poster based maps, slide decks and even a half life level ! The insights into their “home” proved a good icebreaker and each student found new interest in familiar surroundings, some routes evoked personal memories and emotions, whilst others revealed insights into hidden spaces.

The following afternoon Launched our orientation project, over the course of two days students working in teams had to shoot, edit and screen a film that conveys Winchester, this could be either documentary or fictional in style but had to communicate what they as a group decided about Winchester, whether a story about the hoards of ducks occupying the river next to the campus, the new skate park (and its growing UK fame) or a historical take on Winchester.

The films where uploaded to Vimeo for screening, the films for GDA remained mainly factual and focussed on the more scenic and historical aspects of Winchester which seemed to be the main impressions the town made on the students. It was great to see students engage with a very short film project.

We rounded up the week with a studio party to meet up with the Graphic Arts students, of course the games students and myself arrived with twister, operation and downfall!


Both projects were well received, there was some frustration with the time given for the film project which is understandable and although both projects are to facilitate orientation, community and friendships, some insights on time management and level of requirements for the course have started to become evident.
