Top 10 films with scenes involving burgers
and awesome conversations about it.
I like burgers. I like that I have a brother and a friend who work at McDonald’s and sometimes bring me free burgers. I also like cinema, a lot. It’s tough trying to figure out which one I like best, but I know I’ve seen enough of them in the same place together to make me want to write this list.
There are many others, for sure, but I could only write this between the time I ate a burger and got hungry again a few hours later.
10. Clerks II (2006)
The reason this is ranked as number 10 on this list is solely due to how badly the burger is treated in this scene. “This tastes like piss and flies” should never apply to a burger. Having that in mind, it’s totally understandable to make it the best revenge plan ever. It’s as simple as: we don’t like someone, we work at a fast food joint, we make sure the order has all the nasty things one perfect meal shouldn’t have, and our enemy will eat it and we’ll make fun of him. That being said, the whole scene is great and the “pickle fucker” story is a work of art. It’s a big argument and it couldn’t end better than with Jay and Silent Bob eating that same burger so easily.
9. Good Will Hunting (1997)
This film belongs to one of my favorite directors, Gus Van Sant, and features Matt Damon playing a math genius and both well-know Affleck brothers. It also has Robin Williams portraying a sort of mentor to Damon’s character, but that doesn’t matter to this particular scene. Here, we’re all Casey Affleck and we’re all begging for a double burger our brother refuses to give us and tortures us about it until it gets cold. We’ve all been there and, in case we didn’t, we’re certainly better people. It’s not easy being denied a burger when we’re starving and then not being able to eat it once we finally get it. So, this one’s for solidarity, but in no way it’s acceptable for Ben Affleck to throw a burger randomly like that.
8. American Beauty (1999)
At a certain point in this film, genius actor Kevin Spacey works at a Burger King and listens to his wife ordering something there while she’s fooling around in the car with another dude. Then, he goes full awesome on everyone’s faces AND gives them their burgers at the same time. It’s got all any burger scene needs except for the actual burger eating — which is why it’s ranked so low — but the entire story happening in the foreground is definitely jaw-dropping greatness, making it such a huge turning point for Spacey’s character. People should not just see this scene of the film though, as it probably won’t mean a thing to them.
7. The Pink Panther (2006)
Steve Martin, famous comic I sometimes look up to, was once a part of this 2006 film. Beyoncé was also a part of it and even shows up eventually in this clip. What makes it a great burger scene, though, is how many times the word “hamburger” is said, especially the wrong way. It basically says that you can only speak english if you know how to say this word, otherwise you’re worthless.
Seriously though, this is one of those times the film is funny and you remember specific scenes but you don’t remember much of it in general. So, it makes sense it’s here, but don’t watch it, just watch this moment dedicated to hamburgers and then go see something that will change your life in some way.
6. Eagle vs. Shark (2007)
One of my favorite romantic comedies of all time is this New Zealand film directed by Taika Waititi. I’m not just giving you the burger scenes — which are more than one because one of the main characters works at Big Boy Burgers — I’m giving you the trailer of the film, so that everyone who hasn’t watched it realizes there’s A LOT more to this film than just burgers. (which might’ve happened with some of the other films on this list.)
With two extremely quirky, awkward nerds lead characters and top-notch comedy timings, the film manages to make the spectator hope for them to end up happy and together, which you’d in no way do if these were actual people. It has the drama, the laughs and the love in the most alternatively cute way to make it a must see for anyone who goes for the most unconventional romantic comedies. As for the burgers, well, they’re just an enormous plus as the reason why the characters meet, honoring the most basic yet wonderful food place to meet people at: a burger shop.
5. Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)
Back to making burgers seem like heaven, here’s this known film. These munchies really put the “er…this is amazing” in “hamburger”. What makes it great is how much they’ve been expecting this and the whole ritual they have as they start eating. The entire use of slowmotion makes it 100x better than any other kind of burger-eating. It’s in the process, their faces, the whole concept of it being the most satisfactory meal. There’s not much to say. Watch this glorious moment and you’ll understand why it needs no further explanation.
4. This Is The End (2013)
An obvious one, I believe. Short after the film starts, we see an amazing piece of comedy which works as a metaphor for the big difference between L.A and the rest of the country — or, more specifically, New York — that I’m so used to reading and hearing about (from celebrity interviews, mostly). In L.A everyone’s healthy and on cleanses or whatever — it’s sort of related to how getting too much sun may cause mental illness in people. The celebrity world is full of that, with actors sharing their diets for silly magazines and jogging and such. In this one minute, Seth Rogen jokes about this subject by pretending he’s the joke, one of those famous people who do cleanses and still do drugs. Immediately after that, it gets even better when we cut to him eating a burger.
3. Dumb and Dumber (1994)
This is a very funny scene, even though it ends badly. Dumb and Dumber was always remarkable in exceeding comic limits in a single film, with the actors being so convincingly dumb all the time. So dumb, they would kill a man when trying to be funny by putting pepper in his burger. How the poor guy finally eats his burger so happily, laughing in their company as they try to hide their pathetic anxiety. It’s even worse later after they manage to save him and then ruin everything by giving him a lot of pills. It was such a planned moment for a burger, to feature in such an important scene and be the cause of a character’s death - it seems only fair to give it third place.
2. Super Size Me (2004)
This is 2004 documentary written, produced and directed by — as well as starring — Morgan Spurlock. In the film, Spurlock goes on a 30 day diet eating only McDonald’s food, three meals a day. Of course, this could only be a part of this list because it features the most hamburgers and burger-eating in a film (possibly) ever. Although the results weren’t that great, we got to learn what fast food really does to our body and why, even if it’s our favorite food, we shouldn’t eat it every day. It’s what makes us like it more. I think. I know a lot of people who would have no trouble following this diet. I mean, the guy only won a few pounds and lost them 14 months later. Just don’t watch this if you’re eating a burger, it’s insulting to them.
1. Pulp Fiction (1994)
No doubt this is the most memorable film scene any burger’s ever been in. The whole “royale with cheese” and metric system discussion, which began previously in the film, was one of the several scenes we can imagine Tarantino wrote when something similar happened to him, like that one time he went to France and had a conversation about a burger. It’s in how Samuel L. Jackson makes that burger the most important thing in the room that really contributes to Pulp Fiction’s first place on this list. “This is a TASTY burger” is how every burger should be described, but it’s always best when we happen to stumble across a definitely better, different, really tasty burger that we’ve never tried before. Tarantino captured it perfectly, giving it the importance it deserves and making everyone remember it forever.
