Rice will no more be a ‘villain’ for diabetic patients as experimenters have identified a high- yielding variety of white rice with low Glycemic Index( GI)- measure of how foods affect blood sugar levels. The finding isn’t only profitable for people with diabetes, or at a threat of the complaint, it can also be a part of a healthy diet for the average consumers, experts feel.

What makes it diiferent from other varieties ?

Madhuraj rice is different from other varieties because this rice breaks down more slowly into glucose after consumption, therefore ensuring that sugar is more slowly released in the blood, rather than all at once.

For a nation like India which has more than 65 million diabetic patients, the discovery of low GI rice would prove to be great tool to fight the epidemic.

History of Madhuraj Rice :

The history of Madhuraj Rice dates back to the early 1900s. At that time, farmers in Chhattisgarh were looking for a new rice variety that was more resistant to pests and diseases. They also wanted a rice variety that had a high yield and a good taste.

from Madhuraj 55 “Madhu” stands for victory over sugar and “55” stands for GI index of Madhuraj rice.

IGKV principal scientist Dr. Girish Chandel, professor in department of plant molecular Biology and Biotechnology, took three years to develop this variety of paddy.

Chaptigurmatiya” was discovered, which was re-named as “Chhattisgarh Madhuraj paddy-55”. He said this variety has low GI with 91% of total carbohydrates and it has slow releasing sugar tendencies, which was discovered after mouse feeding trials by Chhattisgarh Council of Science of Technology.

Growing Field of Madhuraj Rice in Maharashtra :

Shirala Tahasil in Sangli District of Maharashtra is well- Known for rice cultivation. About 45 rice varieties are cultivated in different localities of Shirala tahasil. The tehsil has large area under thick forests due to heavy monsoon rains.

Taluka Shirala (also called Nagbhumi), which is located in Western Ghat, near Chandoli Forest and Warana Vasant Sagar Dam.

Madhuraj Yeild and its properties :

this variety has high yield of 42 quintal per hectare and is long bold
grain rice, which is white in colour. It is consumed by natives of Chhattisgarh, who claim that it is the best stomach-filler and one’s appetite remains in control many hours of eating it. “In its options, diabetic patients are advised to consume brown rice or unpolished rice, which is low in GI but its taste is still unpopular among rice-eaters hence this CCMP-55 is a blend of taste and healthy values for diabetics”.
