The Group Policy Management Console

The GPMC provides a view of all GPOs, organizational units, domains, and locations in an organization and allows you to edit settings within individual GPOs. Before GPMC, administrators had to use various tools to manage group policies. GPMC combines the functions of tools such as Active Directory users and computers, Active Directory locations and services, RSoP (Resultant Set of Policy), the access control list editor and the GPMC delegation assistant.

1) How do I open the Group Policy Management Console?

To open the GPMC, we can use the following method:

  • Go to Start → Run. Type gpmc.msc and click OK.
  • Go to Start → Type gpmc.msc in the search bar and hit ENTER.
  • Go to Start → Administrative Tools → Group Policy Management.

2) How do I edit a GPO (GPO)?

  • In the Group Policy Management Console, open the Group Policy Objects node.
  • Right-click the appropriate GPO and click Edit.

3) Delete a GPO (GPO)?

  • In the Group Policy Management Console, open the Group Policy Objects node.
  • Right-click the appropriate GPO and click Delete.
  • Click OK to confirm.

4) How do I make a backup of the GPO (GPO)?

  • Go to Start → Administrative Tools → Group Policy Management.
  • In the GPMC, expand the GPO folder that contains the GPO that you want to back up.
  • Right-click the GPO, and then click Save. To back up all GPOs in the domain, right-click the GPO folder, and then click Back Up All.
  • Specify the path to the folder where the backed up versions of the GPOs are located. Click on Save.
  • Finally, click OK.
