Most people enjoy the taste of fresh herbs. The interesting thing too is that growing herbs is easy. All that’s actually needed is a warm sunny area and containers which are large enough to grow the herbs you choose. Also growing herbs in containers can save you the difficulty of maintaining an herb garden plot.

How to grow herbs

Some of the requirements that you’ll need to grow herb plants are listed below:

– Some large pots, either plastic or clay, from 8” to 18” in diameter. This way you can always put together several different types of herbs that have the same growing and watering requirements in one container

– Potting soil of a good quality to fill the containers and plant fertilizer.

– A hose or watering can

To start, fill the containers with potting soil and fertilizer according to the directions. Next, mix water in the pot until the soil is damp all the way through. Then make a hole deep enough for the herb plant at least 8” in diameter. Then remove the herb plant from the original container and place it in the hole. Now gently press the soil around it and water it immediately.

Your herb plants will need at least four hours of sun a day. Herb plants can grow in less sunshine, but not as well. Now when a plant reaches about 6”-8” tall, then you can cut off about 1/3 of the branches for harvesting. If you cut it near the leaf intersection, it will regrow quickly. Also, the best time of day to pick the leaves is early morning. This is before all the dew dries, but before it gets too hot. In addition, flowering herbs need harvested before their flowers open fully.

Growing “fresh from the garden” herbs is easy to do.
