Why Women Earn Less, In Their Own Words

Personally what has held me back in the past is not having a good idea what other people in my position were making so you don’t know what’s reasonable to ask for. Of course I’ve always asked for raises and received them in the past. I asked and got for a salary I wanted at my current job so instead of negotiated for an extra week of vacation per year. I was lucky that I had a professional mentor and an acquaintance who used to head up an HR department coach me in how to ask for it and totally freaking out until I heard back from the company but it worked out and I’ll do it again in the future.
