Race based segregation was a disgraceful injustice but at the period in time that the army was integrated it was an injustice that a non zero portion of the population not only was comfortable with, but actively supported. Also keeping trans people out of any job including active military service is a disgraceful injustice. They are the same issue with different details.

People’s reaction to school integration at that period is a known part of American history and it’s relevant to the discussion because it shows what that national attitude was at the time. As you can see in the second article I linked above the arguments against allowing trans people in the military are the same as were trotted out for other minority groups over time. But as you can see from other articles people in the military were mad at first. Mad enough for top officers to quit. And now the military is integrated and people serve together regardless of their skin tone. And for a brief moment in time people could serve together regardless of if the were assigned the correct gender at birth. And now the bigotry of our commander in chief, who once claimed he would fight for all LGBT people, is being wielded as a weapon against transgender people.
