Discussing Estate Planning with Family
The most frequent question people ask me is how they can bring up estate planning effectively to a family member. Estate planning at its core is having a plan when something unfortunate happens and often times it’s not the easiest subject to bring up to those we care about. To break the ice I suggest you talk about some of your own estate planning concerns. Explain that you have talked to someone or read articles recently that prompted you to think about the importance of estate planning. Talk about how the current political climate could affect gift and estate taxes and most importantly mention your goals of avoiding family conflict in your own estate. Conversations like these provide a low-pressure setting in which to discuss estate planning. If you’re lucky, your family member will open up about their own plans and concerns. My main advice is quite simple, be sincere and your good intentions will show through your questions. If you have any questions feel free to contact us through our website.
