How to Find Quality Films on Netflix

Advice from a Cinephile

I often hear the sentiment that there are no good movies on Netflix. In actuality, Netflix has an overwhelming number of exceptional films — they’re just hard to find. Here’s how to discover them:

Method 1: Refer to Tomatometer Filters and Metacritic Lists

The first link allows you to select various streaming services that you subscribe to (such as Netflix) and set the parameters for the type of movie you want to watch. The link is preset to: Netflix only, 80%-100% certified fresh, all genres, listed in order from highest to lowest scores.

The second link is a new permanent page. It includes movies/TV shows that have either just arrived or are about to leave with a score of 61+.

Method 2: Use the Chrome Extension NEnhancer

(This method works best when paired with Method 3.)

This extension adds IMDb, Rotten Tomato, and Metacritic ratings as well as trailers.

Method 3: When Viewing on Desktop, Ignore the Algorithm

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way to do this on the TV or on the Netflix app. Here’s how to do it:

  • First, Log in to Netflix on your computer.
Pro Tip: Log in on the Chrome browser so you can use NEnhancer.
  • Second, click on the “Browse” button to the right of the Netflix logo and choose a genre. Another option is to click on a category title, such as “Movies based on books” or “Movies with a Strong Female Lead.”
  • Third, click on the box that says “Suggestions for you” and click on “Highest Rated”

Now all of the best films are shown at the top!
