Interesting take, but let’s remember how many geniuses are crazy fucks. It comes with the territory much of the time. From Jackson Pollock to Elon Musk. (Ed Harris’s movie on Pollock is heavy on the negative, and people I met who knew Pollock said he was a terrible alcoholic but really a nice guy. None of the nice guy is in the movie and it’s still a terrific film.) All these high achievers have significant character flaws and tend to be sketched in black and white and not enough gray tones. Jeff, everyone I met when I wrote my Woz book 30 years ago told me that Jobs was an asshole. This is before the whole world knew about this part of his personality. (BTW, Woz himself refused to badmouth him.) Doesn’t make his contributions to our tech universe less significant. Sorkin picks up on the textures of character that make them interesting, and yeah he saw the dark side of Zuck and Jobs and exploited it. I like that he has both hero worship in some characters and damns some of his other characters. You would probably be happier — and maybe I would, too — if he could paint the good and bad more artfully. Yeah, he might be envious of those he writes about, but what the hell, his scripts are far more compelling than the typical crap we see as standard fare. That’s enough for me.
