Straw Wars: A new hope

There has been a lot of commotion about plastic and paper straws and the environment. People, including me, don’t like paper straws. Why are so many restaurants in San Fransisco still offering them? There are non-soggy compostables. The usual reason: cost. Also hygiene, which is related to cost.

First off, I am well aware this whole natural straw frenzy is a symbolic gesture to promote environmental awareness and I mean to unapologetically participate in the symbolic shenanigans. Then my Californian eco-hipster head can get some sleep at night with out an indica, knowing that I did my part to promote consumer activism, capitalism and the environment. Anyway, legal pressure is creating this market. Some policy makers in the San Fransisco and New York are enacting straw bans. Even Mcdonald’s no longer allows plastic straws in their UK and Ireland locations. Starbucks has promised to stop using straws too. South Korea and China are getting in on it. Still the cost is too high. How will compostables become mainstream?

Are non-soggy, disposable, compostable straws really that expensive?

Yes and no.

Say no to PLA. You know those PLA straws that work just like regular straws that say “compostable” on the wrapper. They are cheap enough but, I’m anticipating a lawsuit because they are only compostable in specialized high temperture…
