In 13 years, I’ve met many people through my job as a reporter. Many were nice. Some were nasty. A few made a deep impression on me.
Here are three men whom I will remember for the rest of my life.
When people ask what it means to be a man, I think of Cary “Rhody” Rhodomoyer.
Cary was just 19 when he served on a helicopter gunship in Vietnam.
He didn’t want to be there. But he fulfilled his duty.
Cary’s crew took off in attack helicopters and gave fire support to U.S. troops under attack.
He lost at least one friend. And he was wounded in combat and had to live with post-traumatic stress disorder. …
Recently, I passed my Kendo shodan examination in Detroit. As part of the exam, I had to write an essay on the meaning of “ki-ken-tai-ichi” (気剣体一). Here is my essay.
Ki-ken-tai-ichi means the unity of mind, sword and body in Kendo. It is essential to making ippon or valid strikes, and to practicing Kendo that is correct and beautiful.
When we strike, we must simultaneously kiai our target’s name. Our kiai expresses our intent at hitting the target. It gives ki and power to our strike.
Without a good kiai, our strike stays weak. Moreover, we show a lack of commitment to our attack. …
New year, new goals. My goal is to learn and practice new skills each day.
By “new” I mean something I’d like to master. Whether I’ve been doing it for five weeks or five years.
Never assume you know everything about something, even if you’re considered an expert in that field. We should always approach it with a“new” or “fresh” mind, because we can always learn something new.
Here are my daily goals for 2018. Some things I’ve been doing for months now. Others are new objectives.
NEPA Tech had its monthly Meetup on Tuesday in Scranton, PA. Most of us gave a “Spark Talk,” a 1–5 minute talk about yourself, your plan or a project that you’re working on.
I ended up being the final speaker. I’ve never done a Spark or Lighting Talk before. So I talked about a Node.js API that I’m making to access New York City restaurant inspection records.
Here’s my recollection of the talk.
Hey guys, I love food, and I love beer. I love food so much, I make YouTube videos of me eating weird food like snakes and tarantulas. …
I was digging through old cookbooks on Internet Archive when I found some squirrel recipes! Here are six recipes … Now go catch some squirrels at your local park!
“Squirrels should be carefully skinned and laid in salt water a short time before cooking; if old, parboil. They are delicious broiled, and are excellent cooked in any way with thin slices of bacon.”
The Dixie cook-book, 1883. Page 169. POPULAR DIXIE DISHES
“Broiled Chicken, Quail, Squirrel or Woodcock. — Any of these must be tender. Take the breast of the first two, or the thighs of the others; place on hot coals or on a broiler, turning often to prevent burning. …
As a child in Hong Kong, I was sick one day with throat congestion. Worried about her youngest child, my mother asked our neighbor for a Chinese folk remedy. Mrs. Lee said she knew the perfect cure — a snake gallbladder.
Mrs. Lee said the gallbladder would dissolve the phlegm clogging my throat. I didn’t know it at the time, but snake gallbladders supposedly boost male libido, too.
Probably not what my mom or Mrs. Lee intended.
Mrs. Pang was a new mother of two. So she believed Mrs. …
I created a Slack chatbot with the Cleverbot API, and he won’t stop hitting on me.
Cleverbot uses Artificial Intelligence to chat with people. Its website says, “Chat with a bot about anything and everything — AI learns from people, in context, and imitates.”
What can possibly go wrong?
Cleverbot came online.
“Hello,” I said.
“Hello,” it replied.
We made small talks. Cleverbot said it was watching a movie. “It is You and Me. A girl who are asking you to marry.”
I asked if it was a romantic comedy. …
OutWit Hub is a Web browser built for extracting data from websites. This is a great tool for people looking to scrape data off webpages.
Many websites display information in lists or tables, but don’t give users the option to download the data. This is a problem, especially with government websites that are supposed to make public information accessible to the public.
OutWit Hub can solve that problem. As an example, we’ll extract data from the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
We see a table of recent actions taken by Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court against lawyers in the state. The table lists each attorney’s name, county and the action against him or her (ex. …
I once had a friend who’s now dead. James Slusser helped me when I needed help — and I never thanked him.
James H. Slusser, 83, was a well-known man in our small university town in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He was a hair designer. He was a lay minister. He directed plays. He taught English and theater at high schools. When his students grew up, he often taught their children, too.
Slusser was always on my case for saying “ain’t” and “me and my friend were …” He would yell at me, You’re college educated, and you work as a newspaper reporter! …
