New year, new goals. My goal is to learn and practice new skills each day.
By “new” I mean something I’d like to master. Whether I’ve been doing it for five weeks or five years.
Never assume you know everything about something, even if you’re considered an expert in that field. We should always approach it with a“new” or “fresh” mind, because we can always learn something new.
Here are my daily goals for 2018. Some things I’ve been doing for months now. Others are new objectives.
Since I have kendo and iaido classes on Sunday mornings, I’ll code 3 hours on Sunday evenings.
Practice foreign languages on my Duolingo app at least 15 minutes each night.
Currently, I’m learning German, Japanese and Mandarin. I’d like to pick up Korean and Arabic (when it comes out).
Follow me on Duolingo. My user name is GaryPang3.
Do 50 kendo suburi each day. My sensei’s order. Miss one day and I must miss one meal. From Jan. 8, 2018, to Dec. 31, 2018.
Kendo is Japanese fencing. A suburi is a practice swing with a bamboo stave. Sensei says you can do 50 in 30 seconds, or 1 minute if you go slow.
(He knows I eat all the time. I have a YouTube channel and Instagram account dedicated to food!)
Read one book every two weeks. It can be history, fiction or instructional (martial arts, coding, or even cooking.)
I was a voracious reader for most of my life. Then I started coding instead of reading books. They should not be mutually exclusive.
YouTube and Food
These are “nice to have” but secondary goals.
Cook more. I love to eat, and I love to cook. I stopped cooking because my excuse was “I could be coding instead.”
Make more videos for my YouTube food channel, PangOfHunger.
