God is: Three Persons

Devos for the week of July 24–30, 2017

God’s nature as three-in-one is one of the characteristics of God that can sometimes cause great confusion. An important clarifying distinction is that He is three persons, not three beings, and that as such, He is also intrinsically, eternally relational. We’ll be challenged to evaluate our own relationship with God by what we learn from the Scriptures this week!

Monday- Genesis 1:26 “Our” Image

What is the significance of God using the plural pronoun here? If this was the only such instance would you be convinced that God is three persons, why or why not? What is the difference between “personhood” and “being”? Can God be three persons, but not three beings?

Tuesday- Genesis 1:27 Plurality in Humanity

God declares his creation as a singular “him”, but then gives further definition to His creation, by defining the “him”, as a plural “them”, male and female. How is this reflective of His plural nature? How is our being made in His image, and yet being male and female, consistent with that nature? How is the collective nature of marriage being “one flesh” also consistent with God’s nature?

Wednesday- Deuteronomy 6:4 Plurality in Language

Deuteronomy 6:4 is also known as the Jewish “Shema”. When referring to God in the phrase- “The LORD our God, the Lord is One”, the Hebrew word for “one” is also plural. This is a word that is used in other Old Testament texts for things that are a collective singular, such as a cluster of grapes, or bundle of grain, and so on. How do these uses of language reinforce the doctrine of the trinity?

Thursday- John 14:16–17 Relational in Nature

Throughout the Gospel’s, we see the relationship between the God-head referred to as we see here. God is not only self-existent and self-sufficient, but He is relational within His being- The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist in relationship- loving and serving each other. Therefore, God does not need His creation to be loving and relational, He is so within Himself (self-existent).How does that make His love, and Christ’s incarnation and sacrifice for us even more profound?

Friday- John 1:1–3,14 The Eternal Logos

The significance of Jesus’ deity to Christian theology cannot be overstated. Review these Scriptures and be reminded of what God did in coming as Man in the incarnation. How is Jesus coming to us an act of God’s love? Do you know Him as more than a religious teacher? Do you know Him as Lord and Savior?

Saturday- 1 Corinthians 12:4–6 & 2 Corinthians 13:14 On Behalf of the Triune God

These Scriptures not only reinforce the triune nature of God, but they also imply that we are called to emulate the unity that exists within the Godhead as we live and serve as the Church. (The Grace of Jesus, Love of God, and Fellowship of the Holy Spirit). God is clearly leading us to grow as a church in this area. Are there any areas where you can be working toward greater unity within our church family?

Sunday- Matthew 28:19 Commissioned!

We are called, commanded, even commissioned to be disciple-makers in the name of the Three-Persons of the God-head- the Father, Son, and Holy Spirt. As you prepare for worship today, where has God challenged you in your faithfulness to this call this week?

*Tremendous credit to Nabeel Qureshi’s great book “No God But One: Allah or Jesus”, and specifically the section on “Tawid or Trinity”, which was an invaluable resource, and from which much of the material for these devotionals, and the subsequent message came from!
