My great-grandfather was a teenager when he immigrated to Canada in the 1890s. Said Eid came from the small village of Ain Hirscha (not far from Rashaya.) When he got to Montreal, he fit right in with the French-speaking population. He also got involved in an industry dominated by Lebanese and Jews: apparel and textiles. I always thought that Said and his father learned French in order to communicate with the Marseilles silk merchants who went to Beirut to buy their textiles from my great-great-grandfather, Chahady Eid.
