Google Contacts Page: Design Decisions I’m Angry About This Week

When adding a contact becomes a game of Where’s Waldo?

Let me ask you a question:

How would you go about adding a brand new contact using g-mail’s system? Do you know? When I first glanced at this redesign, I sure didn’t!

I was expecting a big ole + button to be on the top left hand corner above a list of current contacts. I was wrong to expect this. Instead, I am playing a game of Find The Needle right at the moment when I’m trying to save important information as I’m communicating with someone electronically, a task I would expect to be done fairly quickly.

If you haven’t guessed already, it’s in the lower right hand corner of the page. That tiny plus sign and human figure inside a red circle at the fold of the page. It is admitedly easier to see when the page is zoomed out as shown above. At normal perspective it is a bit of a challenge to find.

If you’re lucky enough to find the Contacts page on Gmail, go and ask a friend who may be unfamiliar with this system to add a contact. See how fast they find add button.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
