I walked Misha to School Today

Thoughts at the dawn of a new year

If you asked me what I'm most proud of these days, I'd have to say that over the last 3-4 years (and a gotta give a shout out to my brother AJ for being such a positive influence) I've been doing a much better job on evening out my work/life balance. In 2013, I didn't check my phone or work as much on the weekends. I even took seven weeks of vacation instead of two.

But the beginning of a new year is always a good time to reflect and think about things like work/life balance. Things like “Are you happy in your career?” or “ How many pounds do you want to lose?”

This year the working out and the eating is going really well (although don't get me wrong, it's only January 21st. Get back to me on June 21st, and we can see how that stuff is going) but nothing, and I mean nothing compares to the fact that I've made a concerted effort to start my days a little bit later 2-3 times a week to walk my daughter Misha to school. This is actually a little sad: In 2014, I have already walked Misha to school as many times as I did in all of 2013. And I'm very proud of that. Even though 2013 was, at the time, my best year yet.

But you have to continue to press for angles. Like I tell everybody: “Stop doing dumb shit and replace that time with something useful.” With that in mind, I've carved down 30 minutes of "dumb shit" every day. Now what do I mean by "dumb shit"? Unfortunately for me, I've gotten so good at managing my time that "dumb shit" is stuff like 30 fewer minutes for my community, one less mentorship, one less random phonecall, 15 fewer tweet replies. But the truth is that in exchange for those walks with Misha, those things pale in comparison.

So 2014 is off to a good start... because today I walked Misha to school.
